While everyone talks about the power of FaceBook as a cool means of getting a message out, you hear very little about the power of Twitter as a communications tool.
I inadvertantly compared the two in recent months and found that Twitter was by far the more potent communications tool (in my unscientific test, at least).
What happened was, last November and December I changed the status on my Facebook profile to reflect the fact that I was looking for a job. My profile displayed that info for several weeks. In all that time I had one person approach me offering me some possible contract work. No more.
However, two or possibly three times since Christmas I have mentioned on Twitter that I am looking for a job and from that I have received 6-7 strong expressions of interest some of which are at the stage of swapping proposals.
The very first time Will Knott asked me why Twitter was so powerful was at the first Cork Open Coffee meeting back in March 07 and I remember telling him that the power of Twitter is in the network. Twitter continues to prove me right.

Hi Tom, I agree that Twitter has helped bring many people to my site. I have not quite figured out how to properly use FB to attract more readers. I am afraid to go public w/FB.
In the meantime, Twitter is driving me mad. My Follow button has not been working for four days now. I realize how much I have been relying upon Twitter in the past few months.
I’ll let you know how good technical support is. So far it looks as though they don’t work on weekends.

Hey Jillian… why don’t you try this:
click on the follow button, and then refresh the page. Or, you can click the follow button, and then click on the back button… I have google Chrome, FF Mozilla, Int Explorer, and Internet explorer works just fine, but it’s a lil slower on my cpu… Google Chrome is the fastest, but apparently I have the same problem, which is not really a problem because it does work, you just have to click the return button after that, or refresh the page after you click on the follow button.
I’m not sure if you have the same problem… on mine, the java isn’t doing it’s job very well, and the shortage of memory isn’t helping me at all… it does work for now, and that’s the way I do it.
I don’t know if this was helpful to you.
But anyways.. I get like 30 times more replies on twitter than on myspace, and Facebook, well I’d be lucky if I get one message a day lol… Twitter is by far a more strong tool for networking:)

I blew off Twitter in it’s early days, thinking it was some kind of fad. Boy was I wrong! I’ve only recently gotten my own account (withint the last year or two) and have been amazed at how powerful it is! For me it’s a learning tool, and that is part of the networking muscle. People who are better designers, artist, or fellow geeks link or share articles on Twitter that I then can read. My personal self education grows with each tweet!
What I find disturbing is when people I don’t know follow me. I have to wonder why they are following me! I haven’t done any farming for Twitter followers and end up with no less then 2 a day showing up from out of the aether-net! The obvious spam-crap ones I ban, but others.. wow Just wow The wealth of information they provide!
